FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Ottawa Swans to Host Fundraiser for Southern Ontario Tornado Victims

Wednesday, August 26, 2009 – Ottawa

The Ottawa Swans Australian Football Club will join forces with the Quebec Saints Australian Football Club to hold a friendly match in support of victims of the tornadoes that tore through Southern Ontario last week. The match is scheduled for Saturday, August 29 at 2:00 p.m. at Rideau Carleton Raceway in Ottawa’s south end. The Ottawa Swans are currently in their second season in the Ontario Australian Football League. The Montreal-based Saints are the OAFL Division 2 affiliate of the Swans.

Proceeds from game-day fundraising efforts will be directed to tornado relief through the Canadian Red Cross. For those who are unable to make it to the game on Saturday, the Swans and Saints have established a dedicated online portal at www.redcross.ca/ottawaswans. This effort builds upon the successful fundraising effort led by the Swans earlier in 2009, when over $2000 was raised in support of victims of the devastating bushfires in Australia.

“Many OAFL players and supporters hail from Australia so it was important for us to show our support for those affected by the bushfires,” said Swans President Ray Kaduck. “Similarly, the OAFL’s origins are in Southern Ontario. Without the players, coaches, fans and community support for Australian football that has existed for over 20 years in Southern Ontario, clubs like Ottawa and Quebec would not have a league in which to play. As important as it is for us to support worthy causes in Australia, it is just as critical to be there for our friends and neighbours right here in Canada.”
