History of the Club
The Guelph Gargoyles were started by two brothers, Rich & Bruce Parker in 2001. Bruce had been playing with the Mississauga Mustangs in the OAFL and his brother Rich was living in Guelph. Rich had indicated that he though Guelph with its University and young demographic might be a good place for a team. The club was formed and with the help of an Australian school teacher based in Cambridge at the time some high school students were recruited to form the nucleus of the team along with students from the University of Guelph. Various other OAFL clubs contributed players in the clubs first season to help with numbers and the team was underway. Guelph has prided itself on having a good core of skilled Canadian players and continues with that directive to this date with many Canadians having played the game since the clubs inception. The team has a great social aspect and fantastic sponsors who contribute to the teams viability. Guelph has consistently been voted one of the best places in Canada to live and work with it’s affordable living, socially aware society and eco friendly outlook it is a fantastic place to play football.
The Guelph Gargoyles Australian Football Club is a home away from home for many Australian players. It also provides the opportunity for many Canadian players new to the game to get involved in a sport that differs from the traditional North American outlets. Competitive sport after College are few and far between in Canada, this is one of them that comes with the advantage of staying fit, meeting some great people and having a whole lot of fun doing it.
